FAQs
We get asked many varied questions about the internet, computers and of course web hosting and email. Below is a growing collection of frequently asked questions.
Why should I have a website?
A website is part of your company’s identity. It doesn’t matter if you’re a sole trader or a multinational company, your customers and clients will look for your online presence and may go to one of your competitors purely on the basis of you not having a website. A website helps you get discovered and is a really cost effective way to advertise and provide your clients with a significant amount of information about the products and services you offer. A website can generate engagement; a simple Contact Us email form provides the facility for a potential client to get in touch. An e-commerce site has the ability to sell and give your business another sales channel which crosses all boundaries.
What is Web Hosting?
Your website consists of text and pictures and needs to be saved on a server somewhere on the internet so that anybody can
access it. Hosting is where you pay an organisation to save or host your files for you. Generally the more you pay the better the performance of the hosting and the faster the pages will load. However page loading speeds are dependent on many factors – the hosting company’s speed of connection to the internet, the design of the website and any optimisation of the website. As you can imagine website speed optimisation is a highly complex and extensive subject. It is a well known fact that Google will score your site on page load times, so the quicker your website loads the higher up Google’s search rankings your website will feature. What is a domain name and how do I choose one?
Your domain name is the address that internet users connect to your website with. It’s your internet address, much like your postal address. Ideally your domain name should relate to your business and include words that reflect the products and services you offer. This then helps search engines profile your site. We generally recommend using the Top-Level Domain (TLD) of co.uk indicating that you are a commercial entity in the UK. However if you are a charity or non-profit organisation then org.uk can work better as it implies that you are not commercial company. You will see many .com addresses; these generally relate to commercial companies in the USA. However .com doesn’t always mean the company is US based.
How do you register a domain name?
UKWebtronics can register a domain name for you. The registrar we use is
GoDaddy. They are one of the largest domain name registrars, have more than 12 million customers, 9 global facilities and over 4,000 employees. All .uk domains are overseen by
Nominet; they have been running the .uk country code Top Level Domain name registry since 1996. If you want to find out if your proposed domain name is available, have a look at GoDaddy’s
Domain Name Checker.
